Have you had it on your heart to start your own blog?
I will tell you, I thought about it for over a year before I made the plunge, and my only regret was not doing it sooner!
Whether your plans are simply to have a creative outlet and space of your own, or to build a site for your business idea, creating a blog is surprisingly easy and fun! Just follow the steps below and you will be blogging in no time.
Four Steps to Start Your Own Blog Today:
1. Name your Space
2. Shop for Hosting
3. Install WordPress
4. Choose your Blog Style
Step 1: Name your Space
Chances are you’ve given the name of your blog some thought already. If you haven’t, take some time to brainstorm ideas and check to see if the domain name (that’s the URL) is still available. If you’re not 100% sure of your blog niche and want some room for growth or change, try keeping the name more general or try basing it off your name. While changing domain names down the road is possible, its typically a bit of a headache. So spend some time thinking, and fall in love with the name.
Bluehost is great and offers a FREE domain name along with their hosting plans, which are crazy affordable. Since nearly all my favorite bloggers use and recommend BlueHost, I had total confidence to do the same. It’s been roughly a year now, and I am still just as happy with the service as when I first signed up. I love it and recommend it to everyone 🙂
1. Go to Bluehost and click on the “get started now” button
2. Enter your desired domain name in the box under “new domain”. Make sure “.com” or your preferred ending is selected from the drop down menu, then click “Next” button.
3. Enter you account information. Make sure to provide a valid email address that you check regularly, as this is where you will receive log in info.
Step 2: Purchase Hosting
4. Next, you get to select the “Account Plan” under the Package Information tab. From the drop down menu, select the plan you want. I personally left all the boxes unchecked with the exception of the “Domain Whois Privacy” box. By selecting this box, your personal information is kept private from the universal domain registry (think of it as a digital phone book or white pages).
5. Fill in the billing information and click on “next”.
On the next page you will be asked if you’d like any add ones or upgrades. This is totally up to you, however for just starting, I recommend skipping them. You can always add later.
At this point you will receive a confirmation email with your Control Panel login information.
Step 3: Upload WordPress
Once you login to your Bluehost account, you can click on Install WordPress icon. This will give you the platform or ability to design your blog on your server (Bluehost). I promise this sounds more complex than it really is, just follow the steps below and you’ll be done in no time.
***Note: While there are other options to build your site, I love the ease and amount of support or tutorials there are for WordPress.
On the following window, simply click on the green “Start” button.
Next you will be asked to select which domain to install. Leave this as is, with your newly created domain showing in the drop down menu. Click “Check Domain”.
Check the box next to “Show advanced options” and enter your Site name, choose an Admin username, password, and email address. Make sure to check the box stating you read the terms and conditions. Click “Install Now” button.
You did it! Now to choose your styling 🙂
Step 4: Choose your Blog Style
This is where the real fun begins, as you pick out a theme. This is template or styling of your blog and can be swapped out at any time.
For budget bloggers, including myself, there are more than enough free themes to choose from. Check out Olsen Light, Lifestyle, and Kale to see a few of my free favorites.
